CBT – Cognitive behavioural therapy – is a set of psychotherapeutic interventions aimed at helping individuals understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviours. CBT is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders including phobias, addiction, depression and anxiety, and has a good evidence base on its efficiency.

CBT is usually a short-term and focused on helping people deal with a very specific problem. During the course of treatment, you learn how to identify and change destructive thought patterns that negatively influence your behaviour. The fundamental concept behind CBT is that our thoughts and feelings play a central role in our behaviour.

It is broadly believed that CBT today not only works ‘best’ in the therapy area but it is also ‘best’ in business and life-coaching.

Life Coaching, using CBT methods, applies the techniques of CBT in a non-therapeutic way to the problems of everyday life, enabling individuals to securely and efficiently reach their goals. So, CBT coaching shouldn’t be mixed with counselling, as it is proactive and  focused on a goal.

Coaching using CBT methods works by first assessing the areas of life you want to change.

The areas which people come to a life coach to resolve, usually are:

  • Personal and professional – mainly associated with achievement, low self-esteem, fear of failure, low job satisfaction, no praise, approval, validation.

  • Societal and cultural, where stereotypes are used as the norm and correlate with distorted values.

    Life Coaching, using CBT techniques, aimed at acknowledging barriers that prevent change, clarifying your goals, working on potential obstacles and equipping  you with the tools to fulfil your aims.
